Communities located mainly in the forest and in rural areas are among the poorest and often struggle to access basic services. Communities located mainly in the forest and in rural areas are among the poorest and often struggle to access basic services. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Legal Amazon accounts for only 9% of Brazil's GDP, and 45% of its inhabitants live below the poverty line. Improving the livelihoods of these people is essential if they are to remain in the region and be partners in forest conservation for a period of at least 40 years. This involves teaching them good practices, so that they can produce more with less environmental impact; generating new sources of income; improving education and health services, among other measures.
