Visando promover ganho de escala em projetos no mercado voluntário de carbono, a BRCarbon adquiriu uma nova tecnologia capaz de mapear e mensurar uma floresta em três dimensões (XYZ) com uso de drone. O sensor ativo LiDAR (do inglês Light Detection and Ranging) acoplado ao drone é o que torna possível os mapeamentos 3D nas áreas dos projetos. Nestes sítios, são realizadas medições periódicas de Parcelas Permanentes para quantificar a performance de crescimento de uma floresta plantada ou nativa. O foco é que as mensurações remotas LiDAR + drone sejam adicionais às mensurações realizadas em campo, como já demonstrado pela comunidade acadêmica e científica. Atualmente, a quantificação do estoque e sequestro de carbono nas árvores de uma floresta ainda é realizada por meio do inventário florestal convencional. Isso envolve uma equipe de diversos profissionais e trabalho de campo intenso, vários desafios logísticos e ainda uma baixa capacidade amostral. O uso do LiDAR vem para somar às mensurações florestais de campo, uma vez que proporciona maior capacidade amostral com imageamento tridimensional de áreas superiores a 200 hectares em um único sobrevoo.  

Ao cruzar os dados coletados remotamente com as informações coletadas em campo, o processo de mensuração florestal e quantificação do estoque de carbono de uma floresta (inventário florestal) ganha maior confiabilidade e qualidade. 

Nos projetos implementados pela BRCarbon, o sistema LiDAR + drone será empregado para contabilizar o número de árvores, georreferenciamento XYZ de árvores, medição indireta de altura, medição de área e diâmetro de copas, identificação e quantificação de clareiras e mortalidade de árvores. As informações geradas através da validação dos dados mensurados remotamente e em campo serão utilizadas para quantificar o ganho ou perda do estoque de carbono florestal e, consequentemente, mensurar e reportar sobre o impacto climático do projeto em questão.  

Além da nuvem de pontos tridimensionais (XYZ), o uso do LiDAR + drone realiza tomadas de fotografias aéreas que geram imagens de altíssima resolução espacial, de 50 centímetros em coloração verdadeira (RGB).
