No Seringal Porongaba, uma comunidade remota no estado do Acre, mudanças estão ocorrendo. Antes uma comunidade isolada com conectividade limitada e acesso restrito à tecnologia e infraestrutura, recentemente o Seringal recebeu uma nova torre de comunicação para internet, kits de energia solar para residências, melhorias na infraestrutura, oportunidades de treinamento, ações itinerantes de saúde e renovações na escola local.
Por trás dessas melhorias, nesta e em algumas outras comunidades, está a brCarbon, uma experiente desenvolvedora de projetos de carbono. Sua missão é transformar florestas em pé em uma perspectiva econômica atraente para proprietários de terras em toda a Amazônia Legal e acelerar o desenvolvimento sustentável para algumas das comunidades mais remotas do planeta.
Desde 2022, brCarbon e Vertree – uma provedora de soluções integradas em carbono, subsidiária da Hartree Partners – formaram uma aliança estratégica para dar magnitude a essa missão e obter um impacto socioambiental positivo em toda a Amazônia, por meio do Projeto Agrupado REDD+ APD Brazilian Amazon, registrado pelos padrões VCS (Verified Carbon Standard) e CCBS (Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standard).
O Brazilian Amazon é um projeto REDD+ de Desmatamento Planejado Evitado (APD), o que significa que é baseado em uma linha de base simples e robusta. Tendo como base o Código Florestal, legislação brasileira que visa proteger terras florestadas privadas em todo o país, o projeto concentra sua missão na proporção de terras que estão além dessas proteções regulatórias.
De acordo com o Código Florestal, os proprietários de terras localizadas no bioma Amazônico devem manter 80% de suas terras florestadas. Esse percentual diminui para 35% se estiverem em terras de Cerrado e 20% na Mata Atlântica. Em todo o Brasil, esse “excedente florestal” representa cerca de 100 milhões de hectares de florestas legalmente elegíveis para desmatamento1. Este projeto, focado na Amazônia, está utilizando recursos financeiros do mercado de carbono para atribuir um valor monetário a essas florestas vulneráveis e oferecer aos proprietários de terras uma opção alternativa às atraentes perspectivas econômicas do desmatamento.
Até o momento, após rigorosos processos de due diligence em títulos de terra, estoques de carbono e licenças de desmatamento, o projeto engajou com sucesso 15 propriedades separadas nos estados da Amazônia e protege mais de 30.000 hectares de floresta tropical biodiversa dentro do bioma Amazônico (além dos requisitos legais). As finanças provenientes da venda de créditos de carbono compensam os proprietários de terras, que renunciaram a permissões anteriormente obtidas ou pendentes para converter a terra, e também são convertidas em benfeitorias às comunidades locais que vivem na área do projeto ou perto dela, garantindo que todos conectados a essa terra vejam o benefício dos créditos de carbono.
Resultados alcançados nos primeiros 2 anos de implementação do projeto:
- 12 torres de internet instaladas em comunidades remotas na Amazônia
- 36 kits de painéis solares e baterias entregues e instalados
- 70 km de fibra óptica instalados, conectando escolas remotas e comunidades ao mundo
- 70 famílias diretamente beneficiadas com atividades do projeto, incluindo treinamento e apoio à saúde para comunidades remotas
Bruno Matta, CEO da brCarbon, acredita que “o projeto pode ser uma excelente ferramenta para promover uma transição para uma economia em que a floresta seja o principal ativo… Se conseguirmos isso, poderemos garantir a sobrevivência não apenas para nós, mas para as gerações futuras.” brCarbon e Vertree têm como objetivo ampliar o projeto para evitar 10 milhões de toneladas de carbono nos próximos 10 anos, garantindo que sua parceria de longo prazo mobilize financiamento para a conservação florestal e o desenvolvimento sustentável na Amazônia.
Para Rodrigo Bezerra, Chefe de Upstream da Vertree, “o projeto aproveita uma grande oportunidade de preservar grandes extensões de floresta biodiversa, legalmente consideradas ‘excedentes’, com uma linha de base clara para medir o sucesso do projeto. Nossa intenção é vê-lo crescer e realizar o potencial de um grande impacto ambiental e social em toda a Amazônia Legal. Não deveria haver floresta ‘excedente’ na luta pela preservação da biodiversidade, garantia dos meios de vida das comunidades locais e enfrentamento da crise climática.”
O projeto monitora regularmente a cobertura florestal e estuda a biodiversidade nas áreas do projeto com a mais recente tecnologia LiDAR (que traz mais precisão e transparência à medição de carbono), plataformas de monitoramento digital e sistemas de alerta automatizados com base em imagens de satélite, visitas de campo e armadilhas fotográficas, aprimorando continuamente nossa compreensão desses ecossistemas únicos e de como melhor protegê-los. Através do monitoramento da fauna, 794 espécies animais foram monitoradas nos últimos dois anos – 334 delas são endêmicas e 34 são espécies ameaçadas.
Mas as comunidades que habitam essas áreas são o cerne do trabalho realizado no local. Os investimentos feitos nessas comunidades estão impactando tangivelmente a vida das pessoas de maneiras que muitos dariam por garantido: a capacidade de se comunicar instantaneamente com parentes e receber notícias sobre o bem-estar da família; acesso a uma riqueza de informações para aprendizado, pesquisa e treinamento via internet; acesso a cuidados de saúde e vacinações sem uma viagem de três dias; uma cerveja gelada do freezer…!
Mesmo nessas regiões mais remotas da Amazônia, há uma crescente conscientização sobre a importância da floresta, da natureza e das consequências do desmatamento. A esperança da professora da escola local de Porongaba, Antonia Graciele Vicente Rodrigues, é que, através do projeto, continue a crescer a conscientização sobre a importância de proteger a floresta e o que realmente significa perdê-la.
